Cleansing is the highest-frequency step in any skincare routine, and also the step that interacts most directly with the barrier lipid layer. It is therefore the step where small deviations accumulate fastest.
Skin Surface pH Averages Below 5
Lambers and colleagues (2006) measured skin surface pH across a large volunteer group after excluding the effect of recent washing. The result gave a mean of approximately 4.7 — appreciably lower than the widely cited figure of 5.5.
The study also argues that a mildly acidic environment benefits the resident microflora and the activity of enzymes involved in stratum corneum lipid synthesis. In other words, low pH is not an incidental feature but a working condition of the skin barrier.
Surfactants and the Degree of Lipid Interaction
Ananthapadmanabhan and colleagues (2004) describe the mechanism: a surfactant molecule has a hydrophilic head and a lipophilic tail, allowing it to carry excess sebum and soil into the rinse water. The same mechanism also acts on structural lipids and stratum corneum proteins if it exceeds a threshold.
Traditional soap is a fatty acid salt functioning at alkaline pH, typically above 9. The research reports this class produces greater increases in TEWL and greater protein swelling than synthetic surfactant systems buffered to mildly acidic pH.
This is the technical basis of the mild cleansing concept: not cleansing less, but selecting a surfactant system and pH such that excess sebum is removed while structural lipids are least affected.
What Post-Wash Tightness Indicates
The tightness felt immediately after washing is often interpreted as a sign of cleanliness. According to the literature cited above, it corresponds to stratum corneum proteins swelling and then contracting alongside excessive removal of surface lipids — that is, an indicator to reconsider the product, not a positive criterion.
Soothing and humectant ingredients added to cleanser formulations, aloe extract and glycerin among them, are intended to mitigate part of this effect. They contribute to a better post-wash feel but do not substitute for choosing the right surfactant system.
Reading Labels: What the Ingredient List Does and Does Not Say
An ingredient list reveals the surfactant system used, but most labels do not disclose finished-product pH — which, per the section above, is the decisive variable. Where this information is unavailable, manufacturer technical data is the only verifiable substitute.
